Lieutenant Stephen Austin is a graduate of the John H. Stamler Police Academy’s 73rd class in Scotch Plains. He subsequently joined the Toms River Police Department in June of 1996. He received his bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice from Rutgers College. Lieutenant Austin spent the first 22 years of his career in the Patrol Division during which time he was awarded 3 lifesaving awards and a Merit award. His various assignments have included being a member of the department’s Bike Unit as well as the Motor Unit. Prior to being promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2015, Lieutenant Austin was also a Field Training Officer charged with the training and mentoring of new police recruits.

In 2018 Lieutenant Austin was honored to be selected as one of two Sergeants appointed to the newly created Community Affairs Unit. His responsibilities included: supervision of the Communications Center, Toms River Municipal Jail, Park Security, Town Hall Security and Class II officers. Lieutenant Austin resides in Toms River with his wife, Marian, of 22 years. They have one son, Travis (18), and two daughters, Kennedy (16) and Caleigh (14). Lieutenant Austin is grateful to his family, friends, and fellow officers for their support throughout his career. He is proud to have the opportunity to work for the Toms River Police Department.
